A major heritage and cultural redevelopment undertaken as part of the museum’s “Hidden Gem to National Treasure” programme. Leighton House was originally created as the home and studio of Victorian artist Frederic Leighton and contains highly significant decorative interiors, including the celebrated Arab Hall.
The project refurbished and redeveloped the museum’s twentieth-century additions, creating a new entrance and shop, café, exhibition spaces, a dedicated gallery for Leighton’s drawings, a learning centre, improved staff facilities and a purpose-built collections store. A new lift and staircase established step-free access throughout the building.
The works demanded a careful balance between introducing contemporary museum facilities and protecting the architectural fabric, collections and distinctive character of the Grade II*-listed house. The programme began in 2019 and the renewed museum reopened in 2022.
