The Challenge
Lowndes House is one of Belgravia’s most significant historic properties. A Grade II listed residence with a distinguished history, having served as the London home of General Charles de Gaulle during the Second World War and later as the townhouse of Lady Baillie. Appointed as Principal Contractor, we were tasked with delivering a complex basement extension to create additional living and leisure space for the property’s new owner.
The building’s listed status and historic interiors demanded exceptional structural sensitivity. The original decorative elements - fine plasterwork, ornate joinery, and period finishes - had to be fully protected throughout.
Our Approach
Works included demolition, temporary works design, underpinning, and the full construction of a new basement structure. We worked closely with conservation officers, structural engineers, and specialist subcontractors to ensure all works were carried out with the precision and care that the building demanded. Extensive protective measures were put in place to safeguard the heritage fabric at every stage.
The Outcome
A new basement was successfully delivered beneath one of Belgravia’s most important historic residences, without impact to the listed façade or interior. The project demonstrated Patterson Construction’s ability to combine modern construction techniques with traditional craftsmanship in the most demanding heritage environments.
